How do I impress employers at an interview?

Interviewing can be…stressful, to say the least. But, On Demand Staffing is here to help you build your interview skills to impress your future employer in just four easy tactics.

1. Make your resume stand out

Through research conducted by Glassdoor, the average job opening attracts about 250 resumes. This is great for the employer, but not so great for you. It’s important to have a clean, professional resume that stands out from others when applying to jobs. It is easy for a resume to get looked over or discarded amongst the other 250 applications, so a resume that is designed well is almost certain to catch the eye of employers. Check out Microsoft’s resume templates and customize the colors to represent your own personal brand. Personalization is key. If you’re comfortable with design, check out Canva’s resume templates, and play around with format and placement. Be sure to create a resume that represents you and fits your personality. It’s good to stand out!

2. Ask the tough questions

At the end of an interview, the employer most likely will ask you if you have any questions for them. It’s easy to shy away from this question, say no, and then end the interview right there. But don’t! Ask the interviewer about company culture, or what success looks like in this position. Remember how we discussed the importance of standing out? It still applies here! If you take advantage of asking those tough questions, it shows the employer you are interested and curious about a potential position. Odds are, most people won’t take the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the interview, so stand out and show your interest. Asking questions makes employers recognize your interview skills, making you look professional and prepared.

3. Eye Contact

Take this tip with a grain of salt—do not stare down your interviewer, but do make good eye contact. If you make strong eye contact with the interviewer, it shows that you are confident and serious about the position. Looking around or avoiding eye contact will give the impression that you’re uncomfortable or nervous, and even though you probably are..try not to show it! Know that you are worthy of this interview and this job.

4. Do not use filler words!

You can have the best interview skills in the world, and still fail to impress your interviewer if you’re using too many filler words. Filler words are words such as “like,” “um” and “uh.” It’s easy to get nervous in an interview and fill in all the gaps with filler words, but it is better to leave those silences…well, silent! Filler words may seem like you don’t know what you’re talking about and can be quite repetitive.
